Student Workshops
Guerrilla Filmmaking with Jared Raab offers students the chance to jump right in and make a short film that packs a punch without hitting the wallet. In this hands-on workshop, students will learn how to take great ideas to the big screen on tiny budgets. This action-packed filmmaking session with director and editor Jared Raab starts with a screening of Jared’s hilariously entertaining short Jew-Boy (which rocked Sprockets screens in 2007 and won the Student Choice Award). He then offers the inside scoop on all the tricks of the trade, from creative and technical aspects of storyboarding to how you can create an affordable and portable lighting kit. Students will discover effective shots and different ways to use the camera for visual storytelling. Once they’ve learned the basics, participants will receive a blank storyboard, filming equipment and some helpful guidance from a group leader while they form crews and shoot their own short films. The primary aim of this workshop is to provide aspiring young filmmakers with an overview of how a simple story idea can become a memorable and effective moving picture at minimal cost. At the end of the day, participants will even have the unforgettable opportunity to experience their final projects on the big screen.
Guerrilla Filmmaking is suitable for grades 8 to 11. There is a maximum of thirty students per workshop. The workshop runs from 9:30am to 2:20pm with a half-hour lunch. (Students must bring their own lunch.) This workshop was extremely popular last year, so book your class early.
